One of Brighton’s busiest crossroads is to close for urgent gas repair works this afternoon (Thursday 7 November).
Drivers are being urged to avoid the area, diversions are being put in place and bus bosses have been alerted.
Schools have also been contacted, with the crossroads being close to Cardinal Newman Catholic School, BHASVIC (Brighton, Hove and Sussex VI Form College) and Stanford Infant and Junior schools.
The Dyke Road junction with the Upper Drive will be closed to enable Southern Gas Networks (SGN) to repair a major gas leak.
SGN said: “This is a complex repair and is likely to continue into throughout this week.
“We know this is a busy route and our engineers will do everything they can to complete their work as quickly and safely as possible.”
The gas leak – described as significant – is affecting the junction and workers need to get to the middle of the junction to try to identify the source of the leak.
Brighton and Hove City Council said: “This is a major junction just off the A27 bypass.
“Please avoid the area if at all possible as delays and congestion are likely.
“Warning signs and local diversions will be put in place and SGN are contacting local schools and bus operators.”
