The world’s largest red ribbon is to be rolled out in Brighton for World AIDS Day on Sunday (1 December).
The record breaking, 45 metre ribbon will be laid out on The Level at 2pm.
Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion will give the opening speech at the ‘You, Me and HIV’ event.
Dr Lucas said: “The red ribbon is a reminder that we must continue to make this a priority.
“So on World Aids Day 2013 I want to particularly pay tribute to all the excellent prevention and early diagnosis work already happening in our city, as well as the continued commitment to further improvements.”
Brighton has the highest rate of HIV infection in the country outside London.
‘You, Me and HIV’ is being organised by a group of local and international charities to raise awareness of AIDS.
Among the charities involved are AVERT, the Institute of Development Studies, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, The Sussex Beacon, Terrence Higgins Trust, Brighton and Hove Community HIV Team and CDO Sussex.
Last year the giant ribbon was laid on the pitch at Anfield Football Stadium at half time during a Liverpool FC premiership game.
