Brighton O seafront ferris wheel plan moves forward

Plans for a 150ft tall ferris wheel on Brighton seafront have taken another step forward.

Brighton and Hove City Council will decide next week whether to give the temporary attraction – dubbed the Brighton O – a licence to cover part of the promenade in Madeira Drive, between the Palace Pier and Brighton Marina.

The scheme already has planning permission but needs the extra highways licence before it can be installed.

Paramount Attractions has spent almost two years trying to get the wheel up and running.

Its surveyors have been checking the site – Dalston’s Bastion – to check whether it will need to be reinforced, contributing to the delays to hopes of opening the attraction by the summer holidays.

The company’s original plan to site it next to the derelict West Pier was abandoned amid opposition from neighbours.

The licence will be considered by the council’s licensing panel at Brighton Town Hall on Thursday 25 August at 10am.

Don’t confuse the wheel we’re getting – fourthhand via Paris, Copenhagen and Cape Town – with the original purpose-designed and spokeless Brighton ‘O’. This is just a cheaper smaller version, substituted somewhere along the line.
