A three-car crash on the A259 seafront road near Roedean school this afternoon caused tailbacks east and west lasting several hours.
Drivers were caught as they tried to leave Brighton and, from the east, queues stretched back through Ovingdean, Rottingdean, Saltdean, Telscombe Cliffs and Peacehaven.
Three people were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with minor injuries, Sussex Police said.
At least two of the cars were complete write-offs, according to one witness.
The road – Marine Drive – was closed from mid-afternoon and all through the evening rush hour. Oil and debris had to be cleared from both sides of the road before it could be reopened safely.
