Fire damaged a pub in the heart of Brighton last night (Sunday 5 February).

Staff and customers were evacuated from the Market Inn in Market Street in The Lanes at about 8pm after a fire started in the basement.

Four East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service crews attended – two from Preston Circus in Brighton, one from Roedean and another from Hove.

The fire was under control by 8.30pm with no injuries reported.

Firefighters stayed at the scene, ventilating the property and using an infrared thermal imaging camera to check for any hotspots or pockets of fire.

The last crew left shortly after 10.45pm.
