Brighton and Hove Women urged to enter Race for Life

Cancer Research UK is urging women in Brighton and Hove to enter the Race for Life.

Entries open today (Tuesday 15 January) for the fundraising event which is taking place at Stanmer Park on Saturday 29 June and Sunday 30 June.

The organisers are hoping to top the numbers last year when 4,465 women took part in the event in Brighton and Hove and raised £264,223 for vital research.

Suzi Dent, Cancer Research UK’s events manager for Brighton and Hove, said: “Women of all shapes, sizes, ages and levels of fitness take part in Race for Life.

Race for Life participants last year

“They come from different backgrounds and walks of life but they are united by their absolute determination to take on cancer and beat it.

“Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not about being fit or fast.

“Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun. Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they prefer.

“Race for Life is an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease.

“Don’t be fooled by the tutus and tiaras. Participants may be decked out in pink or fancy dress but what’s inescapable is the power and strength that comes from thousands of women joining together to confront cancer.

“We are very grateful to everyone who took part in Race for Life in Brighton and Hove last year and in the past.

“Thanks to them Cancer Research UK has been able to make progress against many forms of the disease.

“But the battle against cancer never stops and for this reason we need everyone to return to the fight in 2013 and bring new recruits with them.”

She said that every hour nearly five people have cancer diagnosed in the South East.

But Cancer Research UK did not receive any government funding for its ground-breaking research which allowed doctors, nurses and scientists to help save the lives of men, women and children.

The Race for Life on Saturday 29 June starts at 2pm in Stanmer Park and on Sunday 30 June it starts at 11am.

The entry fee is £14.99 for adults and £10 for girls under 16. This covers the costs of staging the events so that money raised in sponsorship can go to help beat cancer.

To enter the Brighton and Hove Race for Life go to www.raceforlife.org or call 0845 600 6050.
