Four people were rescued from the balconies of a block of flats in Brighton as fire crews tackled a blaze there last night (Sunday 9 June).

Five people were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for treatment after breathing in smoke. Another was dealt with at the scene by the South East Coast Ambulance Service.

The fire was first reported in a second floor flat shortly before 10.30pm last night at Falcon Court in Swanborough Place in Whitehawk.

It spread to the commonways and the nine-storey block of flats was evacuated and became smokelogged.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service sent crews from Roedean and Preston Circus in Brighton and a crew from Hove. They brought the fire under control within an hour.

An investigation is taking place to try to work out how the fire started.
