The 4.75 per cent rise in council tax proposed by the Greens was voted down at a meeting at Hove Town Hall this afternoon (Thursday 13 February).
But Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat said that he would try to bring it back when the budget and council tax are set on Thursday 27 February.
Conservative and Labour councillors voted together to defeat the Greens when the council’s Policy and Resources Committee met at Hove Town Hall.
Councillors from both opposition parties said that the Greens proposal would mean holding a costly referendum and that voters would reject the 4.75 per cent proposal. Another six-figure sum would then have to be spent sending out new bills.
Green and Labour councillors backed the original budget package which would mean a 2 per cent rise in council tax if the vote is repeated by the full council in a fortnight.
Rent rises for council tenants and new charges for storing scooters and using lifts were voted through.
The Conservatives said that the cost of communal lighting and lifts should be included in rents. They criticised the Greens for imposing new charges on the poorest. Councillor Kitcat said that help would be given to those in greatest need.
Councillor Warren Morgan, the Labour group leader, said: “I’m delighted that the budget will now go to council based on the Labour position of a sensible 2 per cent inflation-level increase and not the unaffordable Green £5-a-month rise that would have triggered a referendum costing £900,000.”

The services protected would be in the order of ten million. short term cuts due to lack of forward planning results in inefficiency of the order of two million. We are talking about economics not the voodoo monetary policies that caused the mess and still proposed by labour and tories . This business model is insane and busted.

BHCC have to wise up to the fact successive councils have mis-spent and neglected tenants . NOW is the time to BEHAVE as a modern landlord . Most properties are in a SORRY state due to YEARS OF SYSTEMATIC NEGLECT . BHCC have a LEGAL duty as landlord to sort out ALL these OLD problems such as lifts etc . maybe tenants should mobilize and sue them . All the rents are ring-fenced which is NOTHING . For these major jobs they have to SPEND BHCC MONEY instead of lending it and mis-spending it . If they were private landlords , they’d be SUED til BUST !! Luv Lemme

As a Businessman in this City for nearly 20 years, I have access to a steady stream of public opinion on the ‘Green’ Administration’s performance since they were put in control of our Finances. I can recall NO comment from the Public, other than, “Get these people out as quickly as possible before they cripple our City beyond repair”! “We all know what he would do with the money he is after, more silly signs on our roads causing Gridlock every morning and every night, reduced commerce for the Traders who would keep the reputation of ‘City by the Sea’ and a continuing demonstration of the painful-fact that University people may be well-educated in Something’, but running a Resort-City such as Brighton & Hove is NOT one of those things”! We can just all survive this recession, but NOT with this ‘Green’ madness”!
