The brightest and best of Brighton & Hove and Adur & Worthing are coming to your television screens next month with the launch of Latest TV on Freeview Channel 8 and Virgin Media 159.

From August 28, our city by the sea will have its very own local television channel bringing the best of news, views, sport, music, entertainment, property and much more into your homes. Expect seagulls aplenty!

Broadcasting on Freeview Channel 8 and Virgin 159, as well as on demand online, Latest TV will be accessible to 400,000 people across the Greater Brighton area and online on any device to everyone in the UK through
TV Everywhere.

You make it we show it

And what’s more, with a “You Make It, We Show It” policy, you, the viewers will also be stars of the
TV screen.

Bill Smith, founder of Latest TV, said: “Latest TV will have the right ingredients to make Brighton Rock!

“We have been fighting for Brighton to have its own television station for years. It’s so exciting to see this dream become a reality.

“I believe that TV should be democratic. So as well as the Latest team producing top-class television we will be proud to show films and videos made by you, from Brighton & Hove and Adur & Worthing.

“If these are good, we will soon sign you up! Now you can get a TV career started without commuting and together we can build a TV and film industry here!

Turning Hollingbury into Hollywood!

We have already signed up some great local films and documentaries so please get in touch.”

Broadcasting from studios just yards away from the city’s iconic Brighton Pier, Latest TV will be on air up to 24 hours a day, seven days a week with news and sport at the heart of our channel.

“In this digital age we are all now watching more TV and seeing more TV ads than ten years ago.

“Latest TV is making TV accessible and affordable to local business. Video now tops search categories online, so producing a TV ad or promotional video now makes sense for businesses of all sizes.

“Latest TV gives you the opportunity to play on a level playing field with multinationals.

What a shame we can’t have decent local public broadcast channels. This works very well in German speaking counties and has been an important factor in retaining regional difference, whereas in the UK both BBC and pile it high private TV have spearheaded a homogenisation of culture.

As the article alludes to, we are just considered advertising fodder.

@HJarrs – Are you suggesting a Brighton & Hove City PSB channel filled with programs aimed at minorities?

Sounds a great idea, but how would it be funded?

Perhaps we could have another increase in council tax – and then the hours could be filled with video streams of council meetings and various naïve green party councillors promoting their latest activist ideas?

Wellcome freeviewbrighton an opportunity to service the community to be received at a push of the button.
The evening argus of which serves and has served the community with impunity may well become a publishing dinosaur.
How refreshing to look forward to Brighton Council in its many departments and policy making decisions to a forum of which the community of Brighton would a appreciate an open discussion on decision making.

Comments appreciated on support of an inhouse studio.

Gerald Wiley, local public TV and radio seems to work well in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. I don’t know what the funding arrangements are, but I do know that they encourage local culture, tradition and keep people up to date with what is happening locally, as well as producing good quality output for general release across the networks. Sadly, we pretty much closed down out local BBC TV output and itv become a homogenous low brow national company who put out a bit of programming between adverts.

@HJarrs – I do know that the Germans do have a plethora of similar named TV channels transmitting from the Astra satellite at 19.2E. I do not know how well this aligns to major cities nor how well the regional news and cultural programming aligns.

However, the clue in how they manage this could be in the varying prices paid for TV licenses in the different countries (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_licence):

    UK €170.28 per annum
    Germany €215.76
    Austria €335.14
    Switzerland €385.00

If having local public TV results in licence fees doubling then I, personally, don’t think it would be good value for money. I am actually quite satisfied with the news coverage supplied by BBC South East – it may not be perfect but it does cover the main news items, and we do have the various RSS feeds to supplement it.

Let’s see what Latest TV manages to do with a commercially (capitalist) funded service first…

Re HJarrs Started this channel to give a voice to writers composers bands and artists as well as democratic news for the city. I am writer/composer myself myself. I campaigned for years for BBC or ITV to have Brighton channel. Only started it myself when that failed!!

We would be happy to receive public funding. We need to survive and pay people!
We have received none but have raised well over half a million from people who want Brighton to have an amazing creative TV and Film industry. We will show films with no ad breaks.

We filmed Pride with team of 20 over the weekend and our work on Big Screen in the park. We are also working for BBC South East in happy collaborative way.

Hope you got a tasty hat Spud! Come and see our world class studios on our Open Day 19 August.

    All best everyone.

Hi James. At the moment it costs £250.000 to go on 117 on Sky so we are negotiating for free yellow button transmission on Sky and it is looking good. We are also seeking to campaign for cheaper satellite transmission but this will take years.

Thank you for your good wishes for us! We are ready but also need that!!

We got left off the ‘top shows’ list (:-P) but Bmusic will be providing regular, unbiased music programming to the channel spanning all genres plus featuring local music interest pieces, festival highlights, exclusive music sessions and more.

We are driven by our pride in, and passion for, the local music scene in its broad and talented nature and are excited for the opportunity to showcase our regions talent on TV.

Please do contact us about local music events or stories that you think could feature or if you are local musicians/bands/artists that want to appear on our local music news, gossip and entertainment show Noise Reel.

We are a community organisation offering rare experience to young and developing technicians and presenters and have been developing show formats on our Youtube channel (youtube.com/thisisBmusic).
Latest TV have been highly supportive of us and are giving local people an amazing opportunity, we and hope that the region will tune in and get behind the channel.

You might want to try ketchup with that hat Spud.

Satellite uplink fees are nothing to do with SKY. Sky do charge for EPG listings.

As for yellow button, great idea if we can watch local tv from anywhere in UK. Otherwise pointless. This will be iptv version I guess

    Jenny,

I believe this will be channel 117 on Sky as it is for London Live but I don’t know if this happens automatically.
According to the Sky TV forum you might have to manually add local channels by their frequencies.

    http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Find-Watch-questions/why-cant-I-watch-stv-glasgow-on-channel-117-here-in-edinburgh/qaq-p/2008118

Whether Latest’s will be different to the Scottish one mentioned on there I don’t know but I’m sure Lates TV will mention something on the website at some point.

Sorry – I’m only an interested amateur, but…

AFAIK Latest TV is only on Freeview (or YouView) channel 8 and is only transmitted from the main Whitehawk Hill transmitter in Brighton and not from relays (such as Portslade or Hangleton) – so if you receive your TV from any other transmitter it is unlikely you will get a good signal – if at all, but you might if you are lucky.

It is not currently on Sky, or Freesat, or any other satellite – I assume due to the high cost.

It is on Virgin Media channel 159 in the Brighton area only.

I’d hope that Latest TV offer an internet streaming channel in the future.

There are more local TV stations also starting up on Freeview channel 8 and Virgin Media Channel 159 in other areas – That’s Solent will be transmitted from Rowridge transmitter on the Isle of White.

I live in Hove.Reception good.Retune Freeview and it’s on channel 8.Need typical Brightonian hip presenters. So many topics to choose but I doubt if the producers are up to the job.Should be programmes about Local music scene reporters with cameras visiting clubs and pubs.Televising live music from the club’s..Weekly night at the Komedia.Day at Brighton races or the greyhound track.Restaurant of the month. Pub of the month.Weekly interviews with the seagulls manager and fans.Coverage of weekend events cars/motor bikes/mods not rockers etc.interviews with tourists/foreign students etc Weekly Brighton question time with Councillors so residents can complain about problems such as gridlock/20mph/cycle lanes etc A weekly Brighton crime watch with police cctv footage of crimes/criminals.Programmes dedicated to students at uni.Local tourist places to visit.i could go on an on. Advertising revenue from pubs/clubs/hotels etc would cover production costs.brighton is a hip happening and vibrant multicultural city so we should take advantage and tell the world.

I think it’s great that Brighton’s going to have it’s own channel and look forward to seeing how it develops. If it can encourage local talent and showcase the are, what’s not to like?

I retuned freeview yesterday but nothing on Channel 8 and I can see the Whitehawk transmitter from our house! The others like CBeebies, BBC News retuned ok.

But I can get latest tv via my Virgin Media cable.

I know it’s only a baby station but the sound quality is really bad. Sort this teething problem out and you just might grow in strength.

Lots of blocks of repeats in the schedules these days, are we running out of funding already?
