A man who was caught urinating on a war memorial in Brighton is to clean the area to say sorry.

The 49-year-old man was stopped on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly after he was seen relieving himself onto the grounds of the memorial in Old Steine shortly after 11pm on Friday 23 July.

Officers spoke to the man, from Portslade, and he agreed to spend two hours cleaning the gardens with staff from CityClean as community resolution for what he had done.

PC Jimmy Conway said: “The memorial is a very important site for people in the city and when people urinate there it causes a great deal of anger and upset.

“In this case the man was very apologetic when he was challenged and agreed that what he had done was thoughtless and offensive.

“We take all incidents of urinating in public seriously and deal with any offenders we catch. Anyone we catch committing the offence may be offered community resolution or given a fine of £90.”
