Fiveways parking zone consultation set to begin

Residents living in the Surrenden and Fiveways areas could soon be asked to vote on a possible residents parking scheme.

Councillors on Brighton and Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee are being asked to give the go ahead for the consultation to begin in June this year.

If councillors agree, residents will be given the option of a five or seven day scheme, with enforcement from 9am to 8pm. The hours are in line with other nearby schemes.

The consultation would include a leaflet delivered to all homes, businesses and services in the area along with a staffed exhibition.

The proposals have been drawn up following the citywide parking survey carried out last year.

Committee Chair councillor Pete West said: “Permit schemes have worked well to alleviate pressures in other parts of the city and could be the way forward here if there is sufficient support from the people that live in the area.

“I would urge residents to get involved in the consultation and have their say.”

We have just received the Council’s notification about the proposed changes and I am perplexed at the scheme. There are some parking problems at the top (even numbers side) of Surrenden Rd but it is minimal. Should the scheme be implemented all the way down the road then, this could bring extensive traffic problems as there would only be one lane for the cars to drive through. Also, all the new billboards, parking meters advertising the new regulations would be quite unsighthly. Will the parking spaces be built on the grass verges or just off the road?
I just see it as a way for the Council of taking more money from us for no benefit whatsoever.
