Children’s laureate to get summer reading challenge under way in Brighton

Chris Riddell

The Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell is due to get the Summer Reading Challenge under way at the Jubilee Library in Brighton this morning (Saturday 11 July).

The illustrator, from Brighton, is one of 14 authors at the event today aiming to inspire children and young people to pick up a book during the summer holidays.

The free event – Brighton Rocks Books – marks the official start of the Record Breakers Summer Reading Challenge with inside tips from the experts.

Four writers will share their insights into how authors keep adventure stories exciting and four others will discuss why teenagers often love dark themes in fiction.

There are talks and workshops for different age groups – and of course the chance to borrow a book or two to take away and read.

The day’s events start at 11am and run till 4.30pm.

The Summer Reading Challenge begins today in all 14 of the libraries run by Brighton and Hove City Council.
