Brighton and Hove City Council is advertising for a new chief executive – almost three months after the departure of Penny Thompson from the top job.

The £150,000-a-year post is being advertised in the Guardian, the MJ (Municipal Journal) and on the council’s website.

News of the start of the recruitment process appears in the Brighton and Hove Independent today (Friday 11 September).

The council has also filmed a YouTube video about the job narrated by council leader Warren Morgan. It describes “an extraordinary city” which “needs extraordinary leadership”.

The advert said: “We are looking for an exceptional individual to be our new chief executive.”

And Councillor Morgan said: “If you think you’re that experienced, inspirational and innovative leader then get in touch with us. Apply for this post.”

The print and online version of the advert said: “Brighton and Hove is a remarkable place, famed for its vibrancy, diversity, beaches and its historic heritage, including the Royal Pavilion.

“It is a successful and prosperous place, one of the UK’s key cities with the fourth highest jobs growth nationally over the past decade.

“Internationally significant regeneration projects are happening that will signal the city’s new heritage, including the Brighton i360.

“Beyond the famous coastline lies a less often seen but equally remarkable city, home to our many different communities of place and identity.

“We are looking for an exceptional individual to be our new chief executive. Our chief executive will provide decisive and innovative leadership through the continuing public sector funding challenge, working with others to transform the council so that it enables both a thriving international economy and more prosperous communities.”

The closing date for applications is 9am on Monday 28 September.

An assessment day for shortlisted candidates is scheduled to take place on Monday 19 October. The final interview with the Appointments Panel has been scheduled for Tuesday 20 October.

If we have lasted 3 months without a chief executive, why do we need one now?

Why can’t a councillor take the role – perhaps on a rota basis?

A Chief Executive is not – or, rather, should not – be a political appointment.
