Brighton’s Eubank becomes British middleweight boxing champion

Christopher Eubank Junior has followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming British middleweight boxing champion.

Although his father Chris never won the title he was of course world middleweight and super middleweight champion in the 1990s.

Eubank Junior beat holder Nick Blackwell in the 10th round of the 12-round contest. The referee stopped the fight on the advice of the ringside doctor after Blackwell’s right eye swelled to grotesque proportions.

Eubank Senior was ringside and in his son’s corner as Junior deployed the same devastating upper cuts, movement and on occasions flamboyance as his father as he played to the crowd.

Nick Blackwell, the beaten champion, left the ring on a stretcher after receiving oxygen.

Hove-born Eubank Junior will now look towards a European or world title fight.
