Two lorries have crashed a few miles north of Brighton, leading to the closure of the A23 while the emergency services deal with the scene.
One of the lorries is believed to be a powder tanker and there are reports that the northbound side of the road is unlikely to be reopened until late this afternoon (Friday 22 April).
Sussex Police said: “Minor injuries have been reported.”
Traffic is being diverted following the accident which happened at about 10am.
The Highways Agency said that the A23 northbound was closed, with queueing traffic due to an accident involving two lorries and a tanker.
The agency said that the crash happened between the B2117 Albourne turn-off and the B2118 Hurstpierpoint and Sayers Common turn-off.
Congestion has been reported on the A23 back to Pyecombe and the A273 turn-off for Burgess Hill.
The agency said: “The road is expected to remain closed until late afternoon.”
Sussex Police said: “The A23 northbound carriageway, at Albourne, has been closed following a collision just after 10am this morning involving two heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).
“Diversions are in place and motorists are encouraged to find other routes while the vehicles await recovery.”
