Annual summer crackdown on drink and drug drivers under way

More drink drivers from Brighton and Hove have been sentenced for getting behind the wheel after boozing, Sussex Police said today (Thursday 18 August).

Shaun Whelan, 29, a carpenter, of Westbourne Villas, Hove, was arrested in nearby Albany Villas, Hove, on Thursday 30 June.

Whelan was charged with driving with 95 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath and having no insurance. The drink drive limit is 35 micrograms in 100 millilitres of breath.

He pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 28 July and was banned from driving for 36 months. He was also given a 16-week community order, fined £85 and ordered to pay an £85 victim surcharge.

Whelan is among a total of 102 drivers convicted since Sussex Police started its annual summer crackdown targeting drink and drug drivers. It ran from Monday 6 June to Sunday 10 July.

Mike Ako, 22, a chef, of no fixed address, was arrested in Hanover Terrace, Brighton, on Friday 8 July. He was charged with driving with 56 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath and having no insurance.

Brian McArdle, 52, a joiner, of Cromwell Road, Hove, was arrested in Wilbury Villas, Hove, on Saturday 9 July and charged with driving with 99 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath.
