Stop the clock – after 102 years Brighton and Hove Albion finally win at Hillsborough

Sheffield Wednesday 1 Brighton & Hove Albion 2

It’s been well publicised. Chris Hughton said it could motivate his team. Steve Sidwell said the fact was irrelevant once the teams took to the pitch.

But for the first time since they started playing a fixture there. In an FA Cup match,  in February 1914, the Albion have won at Hillsborough.

The recalled Sam Baldock put the Sesgulls ahead after 26 minutes.

Fernando Forresteri and Ross Wallace had clear chances fo the Owls – as did Jamie Murphy for the Albion but he was flagged narrowly offside.

Tom Lees had a good chance for Wednesday then Gaetan Bong picked out Anthony Knockaert who slammed Albion into a two goal lead.

In the last ten minutes David Stockdale made a spectacular save from Wallace. Which looked even more important when Hooper  halved the arrears deep into stoppage time.

Albion gain some consolation for last seasons play off defeat and move for now, into third place in the championship table.

It was a good day all round for the Seagulls as the U23’s thrashed Nottingham Forest U23 7-0 at Lancing.

Credit to the Albion, they did their job well today, stifling the Owls normally fluent play. However Knockaert’s outrageous sticking his tongue out at the kop needs to be punished severely by either the club or the FA, behaviour like this can and has caused crowd trouble, good show Albion, Knoockaet hang your head in shame
