A spate of thefts of purses and handbags has prompted police to warn women to keep their personal possessions on them and in sight while shopping.

Sussex Police said: “Police are warning residents in Brighton and Hove to be on their guard following a spate of bag and purse thefts in supermarkets and restaurants.

“Some victims have placed their handbags into shopping trolleys and then they have noticed the bag or their purse has been stolen when they have gone to pay for their shopping.

“One theft was reported by a woman shopping in Waitrose, Western Road, Brighton, and another in the Sainsbury’s store in Old Shoreham Road, Hove, last month.”

PC Vincent Lam said: “The victims’ personal property in their handbag or purse is being kept by the thief and then their bank cards are being used fraudulently in shops until the victim cancels them.

“We are advising people to keep their handbags and purses on them at all time. Don’t leave them in a shopping trolley.

“If your bank or credit cards are stolen, please notify the bank without delay.”

Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to email police on 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or ring 101.
