The disturbance followed Brighton and Hove Albion’s 3-0 win in the Championship match with promotion rivals Reading at the Amex stadium.
The BTP said that there had been no trouble in the station itself. A spokesman said that Sussex Police were leading an operation to contain and deal with trouble involving Reading fans.
It was reported to have started in the Grand Central pub, on the corner of Surrey Street and Guildford Road.
Pictures on social media showed officers and a group of people outside the Bystander Café, on the opposite corner, where Terminus Road and Guildford Road meet.
