Police chief speaks out about female genital mutilation to mark awareness day

Thirty cases of female genital mutilation (FGM) have been reported to Sussex Police in three years but no one has been charged, the force said.

It added: “Sussex Police are supporting Female Genital Mutilation Awareness Day on Tuesday 6 February.”

Detective Chief Inspector Pip Taylor, of the Sussex Police Public Protection Command, said: “Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a global problem and one that exists here in the UK.

“We need to recognise both the physical and psychological impact of FGM on girls and women, not just when the procedure is carried out but also the lasting implications following the procedure.

“FGM is illegal and, as a police force, we are here to support girls and women whether at risk of this crime or as victims of it.

“We would urge anybody who is concerned, or suspects someone is at risk of FGM, to talk to us.

“We have measures in place to protect women and girls against this damaging and life-changing practice.

“Sussex Police has formed a pan-Sussex management board with key partner agencies who are also supporting the awareness day.

“FGM is a force priority and is a crime which will not be tolerated.”

Sussex Police said: “A series of tweets are going out on Tuesday 6 February on @sussex_police, stressing that FGM is illegal and needs to be reported.

“In the past three years the force has had 30 reports alleging FGM offences.

“Each has been investigated by trained staff and we liaised with social services and support agencies to ensure safeguarding measures were in place, although none of the cases resulted in prosecution.

“Anyone has information or concerns about FGM offences can contact Sussex Police online or by calling 101 and arranging to talk in confidence to experienced investigators, who can also arrange access to further sources of expert advice and support.”

I led a Notion of Motion on this at Hove and Brighton Council in the Spring of 2015, and it gained unanimous support. I riffed the last line as I spoke, and said that this mutilation, “in denying women pleasure, is tantamount to lifetime rape”.
