Welcome to our Brighton and Hove City Council May 2019 election liveblog – where the votes are now all in, and Labour have just become the largest party with 20 seats – but the Greens are only a whisker behind them on 19.
The final results of our hung council are:
Labour – 20
Green – 19
Conservatives – 14
Independent – 1
On polling day, the make up of the council was Conservatives 21, Labour 19, Greens 11, The Independent Group 2 and one vacancy (formerly held by Labour).
The biggest upsets were probably in Withdean, where all three Tory seats went to the Green, and Preston Park, where the two Labour seats went Green. Senior Labour councillors Emma Daniel and Julie Cattell were among those who lost their seats.
The day has been a stunning comeback for the Greens – but despite a big increase in votes, the Lib Dems failed to translate that into any seats.

i had assumed that the public would be able to attend the announcing of the results at the Brighton Centre but i was told at the entrance desk that due to security reasons, the public viewing gallery was closed….. the end of the world/democracy as we know it …
Labour told green voters in Central Hove their vote was wasted and to vote for them to keep the Tories out. Wonder how many believed that deception?
I don’t understand the green lines across other wards on the map. Any explanation welcome.
I hope people realise that when they voted Labour in Brighton they were voting for the “party within the party”. The backing for Labour in Brighton came from Momentum, many of which are not Labour Party members. There has been a sustained ‘infiltration’ into Labour politics in Brighton and Hove by folk who aren’t able to step up and join Labour for whatever reason. I don’t know. Up to them to say. Don’t agree with the policies? Member of another political party? But with Corbyn their hero … “Labour told green voters in Central Hove their vote was wasted and to vote for them to keep the Tories out. Wonder how many believed that deception.” It would be interesting to find out who was delivering leaflets for Labour and knocking on doors. The Boy Scout Scandal is an amusing diversion re leaflet distribution, but the reality is that Labour in Brighton was basically Momentum running under the Labour name.

Do you support the idea of recycling?
Did you support the protests which closed a legitimate business which promoted that?
Are you going to promote policies which allow traders in Brighton and Hove to trade without harassment whether from vegans or antisemites?
The closure of the Sodastream shop near Waitrose was a really horrible and nasty example of politics gone wrong and got NO media coverage really. No politician in Brighton and Hove would ‘condemn’ the racist and antisemitic nasty behaviour that led to that closure.
Google and Apple have massive tech operations in Israel, in Tel Aviv. You drive into the city and huge tower blocks with Google there, right there, on the front advertising their place. If Hamas let the people they ‘control’ through arms and propaganda vote, maybe the only secular country in the Middle East, other than Iraq, could more fairly reflect the citizens’ opinions. But then again, Momentum have taken over Labour in Brighton…
So, what is Nancy’s viewpoint on traders in the city being able to trade without molestation?
hi Marian, apologies if I’m simply revealing my ignorance, but wasn’t the Sodastream shop protest about Sodastream’s factory, built illegally on Palestinian land in the West Bank? As such I can’t see how Jewishness or Judaism played any part in it – I know of many Jews who support similar protests. I don’t see the racism or antisemitism that you mention. What am I missing?
