Some firefighters have been learning how to drive ambulances in case extra help is needed during the coronavirus pandemic.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said that five firefighters had already completed their training and were ready to help colleagues at the South East Coast Ambulance Service (Secamb).
The fire service said: “East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service firefighters are ready to offer support to their blue light colleagues in the fight against covid-19.
“Five firefighters have completed special training with Secamb in case help is needed driving ambulances as a result of the worldwide pandemic.
“These individuals are already qualified to drive an emergency vehicle and meet the necessary criteria to volunteer as an ambulance driver.
“They will be paired with a member of ambulance staff at all times and will work on set shifts if required to meet the needs of the ambulance service.
“Other fire service employees have been helping to deliver medical supplies and equipment and our mechanics are available to provide additional roadside support for ambulances in case of mechanical breakdown to provide extra resilience for Secamb.”
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Mark Andrews said: “We are well used to working closely with Secamb and it is natural that we continue to support each other at this time.
“We have carefully assessed how best we can help while continuing our own work and are pleased to have both operational and non-operational colleagues stepping forward to volunteer to carry out different duties for the benefit of our community.”
Secamb executive director of operations Joe Garcia said: “I am pleased that we have been able to further strengthen our ties with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
“The logistic support they have provided has been of real benefit.
“This further work to enable some firefighters to drive our ambulances if required has ensured greater resilience.”
