Businessman fined hundreds for refusing to wear mask

Viral video shows maskless customer abusing staff

A businessman who shouted abuse at staff asking him to wear a mask has ended up with a court bill of more than £300.

A video Lee Cornel Williams swearing at staff at Brighton Yacht Club shortly after wearing masks became compulsory in September last year, was widely shared on social media.

Now Williams, 62, who used to run Cornel Cafe in St James’s Street, has been fined £220 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £34 and costs of £90.

The video, shot on 26 September last year, showed Williams calling the manager shameful and ridiculous.

He said: “I will get you, I swear to you, I will do you.

“Who do you f***ing think you are? I don’t care if you get fined, it’s not a problem for me.

“This b**** here is a shameful manager. She’s not a manager, she’s a kid thinking she’s managing something here.”

Staff managed to persuade him to leave before the police were called, but after the video was posted on social media, police investigated.

Williams’ case was eventually heard at Brighton Magistrates Court last month, along with several more people fined for breaching covid rules.

These included Billy Pearce, 22, from Arundel Terrace, Brighton, who attended a party in a flat in Stanford Road on 30 December last year.

She admitted the charge, and was also fined £220, and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £34 and costs of £90.

Raymond Amaze Njoku, 24, from Edgeware, was fined £40 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £34 and costs of £90 for being in Brighton in breach of covid rules on 27 January this year.

And Macie-Ellis Thomas-Williams, 21, from Croydon, was fined £61 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £34 and costs of £90 for being in Brighton in breach of covid rules on 10 January this year.

I’m sick of these anti maskers not doing what they’re told, like the rest of us. Build the camps already.
