Soho House seeks drinks and late-night licence as Brighton seafront club prepares to open

Soho House under construction on Brighton seafront

An exclusive members’ club has applied for a late-night drinks and entertainment licence for its new Brighton seafront venue.

Soho House has applied for a premises licence for The Terraces, in Madeira Drive, Brighton, and wants to sell alcohol on and off the premises from 7am to 1.45am daily.

The company also wants permission to serve late-night refreshments – food as well as drink – and to host entertainment such as music and dancing.

The new Soho House is in an area that Brighton and Hove City Council has designated a “cumulative impact zone” where policies place restrictions on new alcohol and late-night licences.

Council policy generally permits private members’ clubs with fewer than 100 members to have a licence until 11pm within the zone.

The policy is described as “not absolute”, which means that Soho House will have to persuade the council that there are exceptional circumstances to justify a licence beyond 11pm.

Soho House said in its application that it was a group of private members’ clubs, restaurants, hotels and spas, with each venue reflecting its “own unique style and atmosphere”.

Soho House was founded in London in 1995 as a private members’ club for those in film, media and the creative industries. It has expanded across the world.

Work on its seafront site, formerly known as The Terraces, was started by Brighton Seafront Regeneration Limited in 2018 after planning permission was granted in 2016. The company is leasing the venue to Soho House.

Planning permission for the ambitious revamp involved knocking down existing buildings in Madeira Drive and building new pavilions.

The consultation period for the licensing application ends on Tuesday 11 January.

To comment, email the council at ehl.safety@brighton-hove.gov.uk, quoting the reference 1445/3/2021/04305/LAPREN.

Soho House was approached for comment.

Good luck to them with that, if you look at the quite frankly insane hoops the zip wire had to jump though to sell some beer or the beach you’d have thought it was 1920s America. The police will put forward some dribble about how dangerous it is to stay open late, even though 24 hour licensing is perfectly legal they will also moan that there are other venues near with a licence… Obviously its the town center. This city’s night life has really been ruined over the past 10 years.by OTT licencing.
