This could be Pavilion ice rink’s last year

Royal Pavilion ice rink opens early for Christmas

This could be the last year the ice rink is hosted in the grounds of the Royal Pavilion Gardens.

The historic gardens is about to undergo a £4.4 million restoration, which will restore original Regency layouts.

This could mean the lawn is no longer available for the ice rink – both during the works and once they’re completed in 2027.

A spokesperson from Brighton and Hove Museums said: “The Royal Pavilion Garden is beginning its exciting Regency Garden Restoration Project, made possible by a £4.37 million National Lottery Heritage Fund grant.

“The project will restore wildlife habitats, enhance biodiversity, and preserve the heritage of this much-loved Grade I listed garden.

“It will also reinstate the original Regency planting design, conserve historic structures, and improve accessibility and visitor facilities.

“Plans for the ice rink during this period are still under consideration.

“The garden works will take place throughout 2026 and 2027 we will be reviewing the events strategy for the space post completion.”

A spokeswoman for the ice rink said: “The planned restoration of the Royal Pavilion Gardens is an exciting and significant overhaul of this historic green space within the heart of our city.

“Plans for the Royal Pavilion Ice Rink during the period of the restoration are still under consideration.”

Surely the Council can see that the Ice Rink is popular.
Need to bring one back full time to the City.

The Council doesn’t run the ice rink. The Trust that operates the Pavilion does so it’s their decision.

It seems totally reasonable that they look at as it would be foolish to spend money on restoring the gardens only to then cover part of them up for a quarter of the year,

I’m always amazed about the supposed need for there to be a permanent rink in the city. Is there really the demand week in week out that would enable one to pay its way?

And it’s regular visitors that a rink needs not works outings once a year.

If there was the demand a commercial operator would build one at the drop of an ice hockey puck. But there clearly isn’t the demand.

It will likely be moved to Valley Gardens once the current works are finished…. poorly btw.
