Armed police were called to a Brighton street to reports a woman had been attacked.
Officers, including the dog unit, were sent to Saunders Park View at about midday.
A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “Officers, including Firearms officers, were deployed as a precaution based on the initial information. Once the circumstances were clarified, the firearms units were stood down.
“Officers are continuing to investigate the incident, and there is not believed to be any wider risk to the public. No arrests have been made.
“Enquiries remain ongoing. Anyone with information that may assist is asked to contact police.
