Petition started to try to save Brighton’s oldest school from closure
A parent has started a petition to try to save Brighton’s oldest school from closure, with more than 100 people signing it already.
The petition said: “Middle Street Primary School in Brighton has been a cornerstone of our community for generations.
“Its impending closure threatens not only the educational future of our children but also the social fabric that ties our neighbourhood together.
“We must take immediate action to ensure that this invaluable institution remains open, accessible and thriving for the future of our families and community.
“Middle Street Primary is more than just a school. It’s where friendships are formed and essential learning experiences are fostered.
“With a rich history, it provides not only a high standard of education but also a safe and nurturing environment for our children.
“Closing it down would not only displace many students but also strain overfilled schools in other areas, forcing many families to travel even farther each day.
“The proposed closure seems financially motivated yet it disregards the irreplaceable value of community heritage. Students flourish in familiar and secure environments and the emotional and academic disruption caused by uprooting them is at stake.
“According to studies, school closures can significantly impact student performance, social behaviour and mental health. We need to consider these profound implications meticulously.
“Brighton should be investing in its educational infrastructure, fostering growth and maintaining the integrity of its institutions instead of dismantling them.
“Rather than closing schools, alternative cost-saving measures should be explored. This could include community fundraising initiatives, optimising existing resources and lobbying for increased government support.
“Let’s rally together as a community to protect Middle Street Primary School. Stand with us to safeguard not only the school’s future but also the wellbeing and stability of our community.
