Woman starts petition to tackle dog fouling

Woman starts petition to tackle dog fouling

A woman has started a petition aiming to tackle dog fouling in Brighton and Hove.

Hanover resident Maxine Brady said that she was embarrassed when walking to a café with friends down from London and they found themselves “dancing” over dog mess to avoid treading in it.

After she raised the problem with Brighton and Hove City Council, signs were sprayed in her street warning of £80 fines for dog fouling.

She also made signs to alert dog owners which appear to have made a small difference in her area of Hanover.

But she recently stepped in dog mess at the Seven Dials which, she said, highlighted how dog fouling was a city-wide problem.

She said: “I’m a child of the ’80s who had to play in parks filled with poo and I remember when the dog poo fines came into action and we could finally play in parks without worry.

“I want other children to have the same experiences.”

The petition, Tackle Dog Fouling in Brighton and Hove, on the Change.org website had almost 180 signatures at the time of writing.

It calls for a city-wide campaign explaining the health issues linked with dog faeces, increased enforcement, free dog waste bag dispensers and more signs.

The petition said: “Dog waste harbours parasites and bacteria such as roundworms and e. coli that can lead to severe illnesses and even blindness, particularly in children.

“These risks are present throughout our community, from Hanover and Queen’s Park to Hove and beyond.

“Despite laws requiring dog waste to be picked up, compliance remains low, leaving everyone else to suffer the consequences.”

Emptying bins may help, but some people don’t pick-up just because they can. It seems as like this is a growing attitude.

Would help too if we could do sth about the constant barking. Half an hour uninterrupted from one yesterday in preston park. Pointless talking to owners, immediate response is 1 they ignore you 2 instant feral anger, seems to be available to them at a drop of the proverbial.serious,y, all day, 7 ish in the morning til after dark, very wearing.

Too many dogs with too many irresponsible owners. Can’t bear the constant barrage of muck and barking that has increased so much since lockdown.

It’s getting really bad all over. Lots of dog owners just don’t care. They know that no consequences will happen to them.

In my area there are plenty of dog poo bins, but the selfish people would rather not take any responsibility. Too Entitled and self absorbed to think about other people.

The ones I’ve seen in my area have always just been laziness and the feeling that they can get away with it.

Ah yes, Benjamin—the sociological deep dive we’ve all been waiting for: *“it’s just laziness.”* Truly groundbreaking analysis there.

Given that last week you were battling the great injustice of someone misusing a green wheelie bin, it’s reassuring to see you’ve now expanded your research into the complex behavioural patterns of dog owners. A real champion of grassroots issues.

But sure, I’m sure it’s nothing to do with under-resourced services, inconsistent enforcement, or, you know, the kind of everyday challenges that tend to show up more in certain areas. Definitely just everyone else being lazy.

I’m loving the irony of claiming someone is being lazy by sharing their experience that people have been lazy, using an AI, because they themselves are too lazy to write out a sarcastic message. Honestly, James, you’ve done better yourself unaided.

Anyway, moving on from #19, it has nothing to do with underresourced services when someone fails to pick up their own dog’s mess. I’ve mentioned enforcement, so I don’t know why “you” are arguing with me on this point either. Unfortunately, the everyday challenge is that the person who decides not to pick up their dog’s mess simply doesn’t respect the space they are in.

      And that is just lazy.

I reckon James is a serial leaver of poo.
