Eleven new beach huts are being put up for sale, with a chance for prospective buyers to view them in a few days’ time.
Brighton and Hove City Council said: “Residents have the rare opportunity to own one of 11 new beach huts which are being installed on Hove seafront this week.
“Situated between Hove Lagoon and the beach, with the popular Hove Beach Park directly behind, the huts are the perfect place for enjoying family leisure time, water sports or just relaxing by the sea
“Ten of the new huts are being built in the gaps on the promenade above Hove Lagoon Watersports.
“The 11th hut will fill a gap near by, following the removal of an abandoned derelict hut.
“Residents interested in buying a hut are invited to an open viewing day on Tuesday 31 March between 12 noon and 3pm. Further viewing days can be arranged if needed
“The 10 huts will go on sale to Brighton and Hove residents for offers over £25,000.
“The 11th hut, which is in a more established location, has been priced at offers over £30,000.
“Money raised from the sale of the huts will be used to fund further seafront maintenance.”
Labour councillor Birgit Miller, the council’s cabinet member for culture, heritage and tourism, said: “Our famous seafront beach huts rarely come onto the market, so we are thrilled to be offering residents the chance to own one of 11 brand new huts.
“The prime location, near Hove Beach Park and the Lagoon, is the perfect spot for families to enjoy relaxing and making memories all year round.
“And with the money from the sale of the huts going back into maintaining the seafront, it’s a win-win for anyone who enjoys spending time on our iconic beach and promenade.”
Offers can be made in writing by Tuesday 7 April and sent to Seafront.lettings@brighton-hove.gov.uk
Bidders are asked to state their first and second preferences.

Shame they are so close to what is now in essence a fairground. How has that been allowed to develop in what was a lovely, non commercial outdoor space for families?
Will accounts be offered to make sure that every penny goes into maintaining the seafront as promised . As a beach hut owner we pay fees and a fee to sell our hut so hopefully the council will be transparent with this, with increased vandalism due to their developments in this area, will there be cctv and increased patrols as well with this extra money?
Maybe the council should put one or even better two huts up in a prize draw . Maybe 10 pound a ticket. Maximum of Ten tickets per resident of Brighton and Hove so the average hardworking person has a chance to own one instead of just the people with money!!
Brilliant idea! Even better put them all up in a prize draw and use the money raised for local community projects. They could make more money than the asking price this way of the tickets keep selling over an extended period. All transparent of course.
Exactly this.
It’s a nifty idea, but gambling laws would likely be a barrier, not to mention the Local Government Act, and the possibility of running afoul of CIPFA.
Great idea. Is the council prepared to pay the extortionate annual “ground rent” for them too?
Councils can run lotteries / raffles
https://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/authorities/guide/page/local-authority-lotteries
But whether they should is a different question.
Even a one-off would incur specific reporting requirements requiring officer time to organisr the raffle. This isn’t like seling raffle tickets for the pubs Sunday meat draw.
And if the council did there would be a whole slew pf prople who would object for all sorts of reasons from ‘councils shouldn’t promote gambling’ through to ‘tickets cost too much’
And what happens if interest isn’t as great as some people seem to think it is and it fails to even cover the costs of the hut? Dealing with refunds would be another admin. £ 10 is still a lot of money for many people and that’s before they have all the other charges to pay.
Oh yeah, they absolutely CAN, it’s just a bit complicated, and as you articulated well as usual, should they.
Are these the beach huts the Council bought off a private company after they allowed them to be placed illegally by the Meeting Place cafe?
Council massively in debt desperate for any revenue they can get, pathetic
So they should sit on 11 beach huts and not do anything with them?
Should put up new huts between the pier and the marina with funds going to restore the arch’s.
Now you’re talking good sense here. 👏
Interesting to hear that B&HCC are adding more beach huts.
Unfortunately, there are a number of more important things that the Council should do, regarding the Promenade from Morocco’s to Millionaires Row.
1. Despite the Storms “Shingling” the Promenade quite a while ago, in some areas there is more than 50% of the pavement still covered and lesser amounts on other areas. Indeed between the Lifeguards Post and Rockwater, some of the pavement has not been “uncovered” for at least three Winters!
2. Regarding the Street Lights, Benches, Shelters and Railings, it is a complete waste of money, painting them every 2/3 years. In view of their age and the huge numbers of old coats of paint. They require dismantling, sand blasting and hot Galvanising, which leavers them Silver. If required they can then be Powder Coated, or Painted, before being reinstalled.
3. Where there are railings with round tops, on the wall from the Promenade to the Lagoon, they have rusted and are full of holes. This was pointed out to Council Employees over a year ago, the edges of the holes are verry sharp and could badly damager Fingers, especially those of Children.
4. The Tarmac all along the Promenade is in a verry poor state. It is old and worn, pocked with repairs and where utilities have been buried. In a number of areas, the Tar has been eroded from the surface, leaving sharp stones protruding. Should anyone fall, particularly Children they would be injured.
5. When the new area for Skateboards, Bicycles and Roller Blades was proposed and finished, many commented that there needed to be Security, to prevent incidents and County Lines Gangs operating, nothing as been done!
6 Recently, there has been an upsurge of Huts being broken into and Graffitiing, which has been put down to the influx of Youngsters and undesirables in the Play area; as above Security is required, as well as Cameras.
7. There a number of Huts needing repairs and painting, some are in a verry poor state of repair. The Councill must take action to ensure the Lease Holders, are made aware of the obligation to keep the Huts in good condition and ensure the necessary repairs are carried out, without delay!
8. We all need to be proud of this area, currently we are not!
The revenue raised from the sale of these beach huts could potentially go towards the issues you raise?
Or they could have spent the £51,000 on the seafront they spent on purchasing the illegally placed beach huts.
So those had retrospective planning permission, so nothing unlawful here, Lynne.
