Trading Standards investigates now-closed cabaret

Brighton burlesque club repossessed

Trading standards has begun an investigation into complaints made about the former Haus of Cabaret.

The burlesque club cancelled several events at short or no notice in the months before it was repossessed in January.

Alex Proud, owner of several companies set up to run the venue, said he had taken back control of the building in February and its website was selling tickets for events again.

People who had bought tickets for previously cancelled shows were also told they could come along to the new events.

But some or all of these were also cancelled and after the fire service carried out an inspection on Friday 13 March, the venue reverted to the control of the new freeholder, a subsidiary of Tokyo Industries set up to buy the freehold called 83 St George’s (Brighton) Ltd.

When it bought the freehold last year, another of Mr Proud’s companies took out a lease to continue to use the building – but Tokyo Industries repossessed the building on the grounds the rent had not been paid.

Brighton and Hove City Council has confirmed that it has received a number of complaints about the venue and is carrying out initial inquiries.

Meanwhile, the company which used to employ staff at the venue has been wound up after a petition from HMRC, one of its creditors. West End Galleries Ltd was formally wound up on Wednesday 4 March.

A number of employment tribunals had ordered West End Galleries Ltd to pay unpaid wages to staff.
