Penthouse flat in former council offices on the market for £2.1m

Union sounds alarm over potential Brighton and Hove council job losses

King's House

A penthouse flat in a building once home to council offices has gone on the market for £2,150,000.

The flat, which once housed policy wonks and pen pushers, has been redeveloped ready for swanky soirees and high-end living.

The Grade 2 listed building was sold by Brighton and Hove City Council to Mortar Nova Grand Avenue LLP for £26 million in 2017. Planning permission to convert it into 69 flats was granted in 2021.

Most of the other flats have been sold and occupied since about 2023 or 2024, but this is the first time the penthouse has come on the market.

The listing, written by estate agents Foster and Co, says: “Occupying what must surely be the best location in this highly desirable building, the penthouse boasts what we consider to be an unbeatable panoramic view from the spacious lounge, which is located on the upper floor of the split level accommodation

“There is a private roof terrace which benefits from the sun and provides a pleasant space to relax or entertain family and friends. An allocated parking space is located in the gated, underground car p

“A residents lounge together with a concierge make an ideal area to conduct those all too important meetings.

“Early viewing of this newly converted Penthouse is highly advised as opportunities such as this are few and far between.”

Part of the proceeds of the sale of Kings House – about £2.8 million – were spent on making hundreds of council staff redundant. The authority’s dwindling staff numbers meant it was able to decant remaining staff into Hove Town Hall.

I bet Grand Avenue was Grand back in the day before they built all them ugly tower blocks. Even the Green space on Grand avenue looks shabby and unkept. One of the most ugly streets in Hove now.

Now they are selling a BARTs house and the same will happen. It’s a crime to the people. We know where the money gets swallowed up. This is asset stripping and many of these investment vehicles exist in tax havens and for some reason not a lot of tax is paid nationally, not local workers doing these renovations.

£2.1m for just one flat. It makes you wonder how the people who signed this off can sleep at night.

Some are still in the party flogging BARTs housing to what looks like, some unusual decisions and requires an absolute independant audit, and we’re not talking by Grant Thornton. We need other organisations looking.

Let’s see if the council answer the FOIs in, they are doing legal pubic interest tests and stalling….

I hope audit and standards committee are reading and using the little powers left to gain the full info here and due dilligence.
