A pub in Hove has been put up for sale for just over £1 million as the owners prepare to retire after more than 10 years behind the bar.
The Better Half, formerly the Red Lion, in Hove Place, has been run for the past 11 years by Simon Stern, 62, and his wife Helen.
Leisure sector property specialists Fleurets said that the business included the freehold of the pub in a street close to Hove seafront.
The Better Half is a short distance from the Sussex, in St Catherine’s Terrace, on the corner of Osborne Villas.
Fleurets said: “The charming two-storey traditional pub is being offered for sale as its owners prepare to retire after more than a decade.
“The property features an open-plan character bar, with seating for 60, a trade courtyard accommodating a further 20 covers and three-bedroom private accommodation.
“Current owners, Simon and Helen Stern, have operated the Better Half for 11 years during which time they completely reinvented the business, creating a thriving community venue with a loyal customer base.
Simon and Helen said: “After 11 happy years at the Better Half, my wife Helen and I have decided that the time is right to start thinking about retirement and hand the pub on to someone new.
“Over the years, we’ve been fortunate to build a loyal customer base and a warm, welcoming atmosphere where people can enjoy good food, a drink with friends and feel part of something special.
“The Better Half has been a huge part of our lives and we’re incredibly proud of what it has become.
“We hope to pass it on to new owners who will embrace its community spirit, bring their own ideas and energy and enjoy the same rewards that we have over the years.
“For the right person, we believe this is a wonderful opportunity to take on a much-loved pub with strong foundations and plenty of potential for the future.”
Fleurets south divisional director Nick Earee said: “Having been based in Brighton and Hove for many years, I am delighted to have been instructed to bring this genuine pub in the heart of Hove, close to the seafront, to market.”
The company said: “The freehold interest is offered with a guide price of £1,050,000.”
