Brighton Magistrates' Court

A man has been charged with sexual assault after a woman was followed through Brighton and attacked in the early hours of the morning.

Alex Ogden, 30, is due to appear at Brighton Magistrates Court today charged with sexual assault, assault with intent to commit a sexual offence on 9 October, possession of a bladed article in a public place on 11 October and failing to comply with a notification requirement from the 10-12 October.

He was arrested following an appeal by Sussex Police after a 20-year-old woman was attacked in Cheapside, near London Road, at 2.30am on Friday, 9 October, after being followed “for some distance”.

Ogden, of no fixed address, was arrested on Sunday.

Detective Inspector Caroline Jeffery said: “This has been a fast-paced investigation with the suspect identified through thorough investigation work and a public appeal for information.

“We commend the bravery of the victim who we continue to support with specialist officers. We also thank those who came forward with information to assist police.

“We take every report of sexual offending seriously and are committed to doing all we can to protect the public, support victims, and apprehend those found responsible.”

If you have any information that could assist the investigation, please contact police online or phone 101, quoting Operation Toronto.
