Parked police cars help clog up seafront cycle lane after wands removed for resurfacing

Scores of cars have been parking in the new seafront cycle lane since it was resurfaced – including police cars.

New double yellow lines have yet to be painted, and the flexible wands separating the lane have not been put back in, meaning the lane is now a free for all.

Cycling campaigners have asked Sussex Police to ask officers not to set a bad example by parking in the lane.

After being shown pictures of the police cars parked up, the force has says it will investigate.

Meanwhile, the wands are set to be replaced tomorrow.

Cyclist Mark Strong, who took the picture above, said: “Of course in an emergency police drivers should be able to stop where they need to. But there’s no indication of that here – not even hazard lights.

“Brighton and Hove Police should be setting example for public, not adding to risk.”

And the Bricycles campaign tweeted: “We’ve also noticed Sussex Police parking in the temporary cycle lanes at times when carrying out checks on the seafront and would appreciate if they parked elsewhere as this compromises safety of people cycling.”

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “We’ve requested further information from the person who took the photograph so we can look into this.

“Brighton and Hove Police is committed to keeping people safe on the roads. We work closely with partners in the local authority and local community groups to listen and respond to concerns raised by the public.

“It’s imperative that everyone plays their part to keep each other safe on the roads.”

A council spokesperson said: “The flexible wands were removed temporarily so that resurfacing work could be carried out.

“The wands will be reinstalled with work set to be completed, as scheduled, this coming Thursday.”

This work hasn’t been handled at all well, there’s been too long a gap before putting the signage in place, leading to total confusion, and danger.

I blame the contractors, and the council.

Complete carnage every step of the way from Duke’s Mound to the Avenues. Cycled it going westwards on Monday evening. What a joke in this age of Health and Safety! My favourite bit was coming from the Marina and approaching the crazy golf where the right side of the road is no entry (it’s one way for traffic) and huge plastic bollards funnelled me into a reduced single lane heading for collision course with eastbound cyclists! No proper signs when I reached the resurfacing but I could see cars parked in what is supposed to be the new westbound cycle lane. That I didn’t mind because I’d far prefer to cycle on the original lane separated from all the clogged up traffic.

Not the fault of the Police but I guess in gives Mark something to moan about. The whole cycle lane remarking and resurfacing is chaos along the A259. Blue Badge bays still not painted in, cars generally parking in the cycle lane and to me the width of the cycle lane has got wider? Instead of completing a section and moving on it’s been done in a haphazard bits and pieces approach.

I wonder what will happen to the hugely undersubscribed osr cycle lanes?
The cycling lobby seem to be starting to big up Portland Rd and New Church Rd. Will reason prevail? Is Cllr Lloyd (our man at Sustrans) preparing to throw all his toys out of his pram?

Why Brighton seafront needs two very wide cycle lanes ( pavement and road) no idea…. crazy.. the traffic is a nightmare already and we haven’t even hit the summer months yet.. fumes from queuing cars all along the front can’t be good for the environment… thought Brighton is supposed to be green.. the persons responsible clearly doesn’t drive on the roads damaged by the Green Party… give us back the roads as they should be “for cars”

It’s the stupidest cycle lane going!
It is not there in the parts where drunk pedestrians walk into you (by the pier) and it just peters out at points too (will that change?) It still feels much safer to stay on the old cycle lane which is fine as it is.
It’s good if it has gotten slightly wider as initially it was too narrow to overtake but it’s hard to see what was up with the old lane really (which is still heavily used)!
I’m very glad to see Woodingdean to Falmer path is getting fixed though as we do need a decent connection to get to the Uni’s & Lewes!
