A Hove business has been fined £500 for putting up scaffolding in the street without a licence.
Street Scaffolding, of Church Road, Hove, was also ordered to pay £450 legal costs and a £15 victim surcharge at Brighton Magistrates’ Court last Thursday (8 March).
The company admitted the offence under the Highways Act after putting up scaffolding in Eaton Road, Hove, without the permission of Brighton and Hove City Council.
The council said that, as part of the licence application, its highways team would check to make sure that scaffolding was not causing a danger to the public.
It said that unlicensed and therefore illegal scaffolding was unchecked and could put people in danger.
It added that this was unfair to law-abiding firms who made sure that they were meeting their legal requirements by applying for a licence.
Councillor Ian Davey, the council’s cabinet member for transport and the public realm, said: “Hopefully this has sent a clear message to all scaffolding companies that they should apply for a licence to make sure their scaffolding is safe and not causing a danger to public on the street.”
