Oceana earns dubious title of Brighton's most violent club

A violent attack took place in Oceana night club in West Street every other week last year, new figures reveal.

The night club topped a table detailing how many times Sussex Police recorded violence against the person at licensed premises in Brighton and Hove.

Some 25 incidents were recorded from April 2009 to March 2010 – almost double the next most violent venue.

It also had the same distinction the previous year, when 31 violent attacks were recorded there by Brighton police.

In one of the most serious attacks, in March this year, a 27-year-old was left with bleeding on the brain after he and a 24-year-old man were attacked there.

In second and third place last year were two King´s Road Arches clubs, Coalition and the Honey Club, which had 11 and 14 attacks respectively.

In total, West Street venues were host to 46 attacks, with 11 recorded at Yates´s, seven at Tru, six at Pasha and four at Oxygen.

The Ocean Rooms, which was shut in January and stripped of its licence the following month, had only four violent attacks recorded.

Oceana hit the headlines in February this year when former Playboy model Louise Glover was convicted of a brutal attack on love rival Maxine Hardcastle, which took place in the club’s toilets in December 2007.
