Portslade charity prepares pop-up denim sale

Denim clothing ready to go on sale at Emmaus next Saturday

A Portslade charity is preparing for a denim pop-up at its popular vintage clothing store in the Old Village.

Emmaus Brighton and Hove plans to offer more than 400 denim items, including jeans, jackets and dresses, in a huge range of sizes – and featuring well-known brands and designer labels.

The homelessness charity is holding the sale at Outfit – its vintage clothing store in Drove Road – from 9.30am next Saturday (28 January).

Emmaus said: “According to research from the UN, around 10,000 litres of water is needed to make a single pair of denim jeans.

“Promoting sustainable and eco-friendly fashion is at the heart of the ethos of Outfit – and buying secondhand denim is a fantastic way for consumers to make sustainable shopping choices.”

Business manager Joel Lewis said: “A pair of jeans is something that everyone has in their wardrobe and a good pair will last for years and years.

“However, the process of making denim is also one of the most destructive in terms of water usage.

“Buying quality secondhand denim is a fantastic way of bypassing the fast fashion industry and investing in pieces that will last a lot longer.”

Emmaus Brighton and Hove offers up to 57 people who have experienced homelessness – known as companions – a home for as long as they need it and meaningful work in its social enterprises.

These include a café and six shops – the Secondhand Superstore, Outfit at Emmaus, the Greenhouse at Emmaus, Emporium at Emmaus, the Bedroom Store and Emmaus by the Sea.

The charity also offers a delivery service and collections of furniture donations.

The Secondhand Superstore has become a popular destination, offering secondhand and vintage shopping including the vintage clothing store, home-grown plants, a much-loved café and much more.

The work of Emmaus places a big emphasis on sustainability, with kitchen waste being recycled in an onsite composter, and almost everything sold in the shops is either secondhand or grown on site.

These social enterprises are key to the Emmaus model, providing work and training for companions and generating the income needed to look after the community.

Emmaus Brighton and Hove has now been offering support to people experiencing homelessness in Sussex for 25 years, supporting 1,543 companions at its Portslade premises since 1997.

There are currently 30 Emmaus communities across the country, supporting more than 850 companions, plus three groups working towards setting up an Emmaus community in their area.

The pop-up is due to start at 9.30am on Saturday 28 January at Emmaus Brighton and Hove, Drove Road, Portslade, BN41 2PA.
