More parking bays to be dedicated for electric charging

The price of on-street charging for electric cars is to rise by more than 50% from Monday.

Brighton and Hove City Council says the rise in the cost of wholesale electricity means Blink Charging, which operates the chargers, is sometimes paying more than its charging.

The cost of charging at a lamp post or fast charger is rising from 39p to 61p, a rise of 56% – and the cost of a rapid charger is going from 44p to 79p – a rise of almost 80%.

The council is still offering free parking while charging and 50% discounts to vehicles deemed low emission for a variety of permits, including resident permits.

Low emissions is classed as a vehicle that emits less than 120g of CO2 per KM, which will include all pure EV vehicles.

The huge Japanese, highly polluting Bongo Friendees also qualify for low emission permits. Not because they are low emission. They aren’t, the are highly polluting. But as imports, the government doesn’t have any emissions data for them and hence they are considered “low”.

To not operate at a loss? Come now, that’s just stupid reasoning. You can’t expect something to be financially unsustainable, can you? No, no you cannot.

I assume the council is trying to lower demand to mitigate a shortfall in capability rather than increase capacity.

Brighton council so I assume all of the charging points are also in bike lanes or bus lanes to make then extra fun to use.

Brighton has been ruined by the insane greens. They are out for every penny or hundreds of pounds they can get. I use to love easy going sunny Brighton, but now I’m afraid to leave my house incase I get charged for every exhale of CO2 in my breath.

Or…one can not assume at all, and look at the basic figures which show that costs are currently higher than income. And regarding location, those are public knowledge as well, so what we CAN assume, is that you’re just a tad disingenuous with your comment there, which, we can assume, is purely to be inflammatory as opposed to being objective or accurate.

Disgraceful so it’s now more expensive to change an EV than a petrol or diesel vehicle if you don’t have a home charger. That’s really going to help the EV take up! I know this is a private company running this but come on B&H council, sort your act out, you could help influence this. I wonder what % you get! Oh and more driving charges coming in, quadrupling of some parking charges (being reviewed) and fines for waiting somewhere which you know will be abused by over zealous parking attendants and some cameras I imagine. Indirect taxation and you still don’t manage to complete all of the jobs that you are contracted to do with the outrageous Council Tax that we pay you!

So you DO see all three being used at the same time? Even as an anecdotal backfire, that’s not a very compelling comment to make, Kelly.

Sure we all know that the electric charging will hit the price of fuel soon in next couple of years as these companies will want massive profits. Those on electric cars who are thinking they are saving money that will be very short period

It’s a bit of a strawman argument, because this article is talking about the well-known most expensive way to charge an EV car, what this is more likely to mean is that there will be a greater push for companies and places of work to offer charging points, and like any car purchase, an intelligent buyer will be looking at usage, including charging availability.

With the previous increase The cost in June 2022 already went up from 26p per kWh to 39p per kWh which in itself was a 50% increase. Now another increase to 61p….. Brighton&Hove council needs to open up their position on EV ownership. I am happy to have ‘gone green’, but where is Labours position ? Just grabbing money where it can? Then offer me the alternative to charge from my house over the pavement in a conservation area!

We’re still in a cost of greed crisis caused by the central government, unfortunately, and energy is one of the sectors that has been hit the hardest. It’s less a BHCC issue, and more a national one. Although, I do think companies could be encouraged to invest in car charging points for their employees and guests to normalise charging points.

Folks, unlike petrol and diesel, EV owners have a regulator to complain to – OFGEM. https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/information-consumers/energy-advice-households/making-complaint-about-your-energy-supplier-or-network-operator
Might be interesting to see if they have a view on this?
