One of Portslade’s post offices is set to move down the road to a new convenience store where a tanning studio currently operates.
The post office at 37-38 Station Road will be moving to 8 Station Road, currently occupied by Sunshine Tanning Studio, subject to consultation.
Post Office says it will turn into a convenience store and the post office counter will be operated by the existing postmaster.
The branch would offer the same range of products and services, except the National Lottery or the cash machine, and the same opening hours from Monday to Saturday.
A public consultation is open for locals to give feedback on the proposed move. The consultation closes on 8 December.
There would be three serving positions: two screened and a Post Office serving point at the retail counter of the convenience store.
The entrance to the proposed premises is on an incline and currently there is a step with wide doors.
As part of the refurbishment plan, the postmaster would complete works to improve the entrance access on the incline.
There are limited parking bays on Vale Road and further parking 50 metres away along Station Road with dedicated disabled bays.

So if I’m reading this correctly, still no free cash machine near the train station? Otherwise it seems a better location for them.
You must be joking it’s the worst post office going moving small place what a joke fed up picking my post it would work out cheaper delivering my own mail allways get the wrong mail next street and weeks to late perthetic service
Go back to the 18 hundreds pony express will be 3 weeks quicker first class stamps don’t happen anymore you should pay us up having to pick our mail up employee people who can read put mail in right mail box
so where are elderly people supposed to park if this goes ahead ??
At the moment you can park right opposite the PO: its on street parking all the way the the seafront (about 500m) so theres always parking spaces there. Theres a pedestian crossing right opposite the post office so elderly people can get there safely.
At the new location you simply cannot park : how are elderly people from outside the high street supposed to then use the PO: it is “permit holders only” all the way down Vale Rd, “permit holders only ” all the way down Portland Rd, and double yellows all the way up Station Rd. / Boundary Rd and Carlton Terrace
the nearest parking to the proposed site is :
about 200m away down Victoria Rd you can park if you fancy your chances crossing the railway line on foot. My dad would hardly be able to do that on his walking frame! True theres 3 spaces down Vale Rd but theyre always occupied as are the 5 opposite Boots about 200m away. If you can park at Boots (after waiting for someone parked there to leave and blocking the whole high street up for a while) you still have to cross the road and trek 200m.
Basically, theres such restricted parking at the tanning studio that you would still have to park down opposite where the PO is currently situated and then walk the half kilometer to get to the new place. Not possible for the elderly.
This move will only inconvenience users of the Post Office in Portslade and be certain to reduce PO business
The article is incorrect the post office will remain open and will not be closing on the 8th December. This is the date the consultation is due to end.
It would be sad to see the MAIN PO in Portslade moved to an already overcrowded area by the railway gates where there is no facilities for parking. What with Greg’s/ Tiba /Iceland very busy excellent stores.Already illegal parking in Vale Rd and would the bus stop be used by people saying oh! I’ve just popped in for a stamp . The bus drivers already have a hard enough job with the gates .And also where will the vans park to pick up the parcels not on the pavement I hope again a busy bus stop with children running around. Would it have an outside ATM the premiere shop next door used to have one.Do we really need 2 general stores next to each other . Would the general part of the PO be yet another purveyor of cheap alcohol we already have ample in the area . Infact it looks to me to be just a Sub not Main PO I know that in recent years we have lost 3 Sub Po’s in Portslade the Village/ Southern Cross/ Church Rd ( Portslade): so again the people from Mile Oak/Upper Portslade/South Portslade who used the No 1/1a bus will now have to walk up and and back Station road to the gates and also the people from West Hove who lost the Richardson road sub PO
