Brighton and Hove community leaders target youth unemployment

Political and community leaders in Brighton and Hove are to meet to look at ways to tackle youth unemployment.

A report to the Brighton and Hove Strategic Partnership said: “Youth unemployment is rising in Brighton and Hove.

“Recent increases in worklessness have been fastest among young people under the age of 24.

“Unemployment in this group was rising prior to the recession.”

The report said that 1,630 people aged 18 to 24 years old were claiming out of work benefits.

It also said that 7.9 per cent of young people aged 16 to 18 years old were not in employment, education or training – known as Neets. This compared with 8.4 per cent in similar areas.

The issue will be discussed next week by the Public Service Board. The board includes, among others, representatives of Brighton and Hove City Council, Sussex Police, Brighton and Hove City Primary Care Trust, Sussex University and Brighton University.

Two other areas of concern were highlighted

  • housing and homelessness
  • problem drinking

The Strategic Partnership was told that good progress had been made in bringing council houses and flats up to a better standard.

Similarly, good progress had been made in ensuring more stable placements for children in care in giving greater choice to adults receiving social care.

Housing advisers, including those employed by the council and Brighton Housing Trust (BHT), were also praised for helping more than a thousand individuals and families at risk of losing their home.

The progress and problem areas were detailed in a report about the City Performance Plan by Paula Black, the council’s head of analysis and performance.
