Two Labour councillors removed from duties during investigation

Cllr Bharti Gajja

Two Labour councillors have been removed from committees while an investigation takes place into as yet unspecified allegatons.

Bharti Gajjar and Chandni Mistry, both of whom were elected for the first time in May, are under investigation by the Labour Party.

Both women have been removed from positions on outside bodies and committees.

Although Labour has not said what the investigation is about, Brighton and Hove News understands the allegations do not involve antisemitism.

Chandni Mistry

Brighton and Hove Labour chief whip, Cllr Amanda Grimshaw, said: “Pending the outcome of an investigation by the Labour Party, Cllr Gajjar and Cllr Mistry have been removed from their positions on outside bodies, committees and lead member roles until the investigation is complete.

“They are also currently not permitted to attend Labour Group meetings.”

Cllr Gajjar is ward councillor for Kemptown, and Cllr Mistry for Queens Park.

I hope Labour get this under control. Really encouraging to see the only Shadow bench minister attending the antisemitism march in London yesterday was our very own Peter Kyle – great to see.

      Gets what “under control”?

Did you misread the article? What are you hoping they get under control? The allegations are as yet unspecified, perhaps someone said they both took an extra biscuit at the coffee break and it will be looked at and dropped, who knows? But saying “get this under control” like there’s some global extra biscuit taking ring that Labour have to send the heavy’s in to deal with is bizarre.

What Labour must get under control is the heamoraging of Councilors. Potentially 3 in a week. The previous administration fell to the Greens because councilors could not behave themselves. Labour (as proved by Peter Kyle), are better than this but the local group still has a way to go. Are they not vetting councilors properly? Are said councilors lying? Either way it’s an issue the Greens and Tories do not seem to have with such prevelance.

Mr Jaffa Cakes is trying to plead deniability for because “We had a whole law thing in Ireland to sort this nonsense out years ago to define if we are a cake or a biscuit.”

What are they under investigation for?

Cllr Gajjar has been a hopeless councillor regardless of these allegations. Away for weeks on end and making zero impact on the ward.

Hopefully not yet more women councillors being bullied and sanctioned for expressing a legitimate concern/opinion on women’s and girls health, wellbeing and rights. Sadly suspect it is given the lack of transparency about the accusations and sanctions imposed.

I’ve tried contacting councillor Gajjar over 16 times since elected, not once has she replied or shown any interest in multiple issues brought to her attention. No acknowledgement, just a vacuum of silence on each occasion. 6 months in office and still nothing, shockingly vacant and very disrespectful of her constituents.

I suggest making an official standards complaint. Surely one of the primary responsibilities of Councillors is to respond to their residents?

They are just stooge Councillors parachuted in to make up the numbers.
They haven’t done a stroke of work since they were selected by the main Labour Party, who would have known exactly who they were parachuting in.
No one will miss them and they probably weren’t that fussed about the gig in the first place.

I agree with Nathan, Gary and Barry.
Apparently those two councillors live in Leicester which is why they are not accountable. Not vetted properly.
Cllr Thomson was bullied by her own labour councillors.

Is it true this is an Aunt and her niece based in Leicester with no connection to Brighton and Hove? This would explain why they have kept a low profile as Councillors if so. Except for the one nominated for an award for being young.
