Brighton and Hove Albion were beaten by a 97th minute Brennan Johnson winner even after the fourth official signalled just six minutes extra!

Albion went ahead on 17 minutes after Danny Welbeck was clipped in the area by Micky van de Ven. Pascal Gross converted the penalty to put Albion 1-0 up.

Welbeck had a chance to put Albion in front inside a minute but Guglielmo Vicario pushed his effort away.

Albion took some chances defensively but held out until half time.

On 60 minutes, after Lewis Dunk cleared a first effort by Pape Sarr, the Spurs midfielder slammed home the rebound.

Substitute Ansu Fati and Welbeck both had great chances to win it for Albion.

But, with the clock already at the completion of added time and with James Maddison, Heung-Min Son and Richarlison all involved, Johnson fired Spurs winner.

Albion go to a rejuvenated Sheffield United next Sunday (18 February).

Today, the Blades, still bottom of the table, won 3-1 at Luton where, on Tuesday 30 January, the Seagulls were beaten 4-0.

I’m not a football fan so I don’t have a drum to beat here. But to me it seems pretty silly to rely on the referee for timekeeping; he has enough to do following the flow of play, observing fouls, offsides etc. Surely the sensible option would be for the start and end of play to be signalled by a sound signal over the PA, controlled by an electronic timer. Any extra time sanctioned by the fourth official could just be programmed by him into the timer through a simple keypad.
Yes, I realise that such a change would have to be approved by the FA and is therefore unlikely to happen – there’s a reason why they’re called the FA, its because thats what they do; but come on guys, this is the 21st century…
