Brighton and Hove Albion are out of the FA Cup after losing 4-3 to Nottingham Forest on penalties at the Amex.

It was a game where Forest had a penalty overturned by VAR in normal time, Matz Sels making a wonder save from Joao Pedro and Albion having a goal disallowed late in extra time.

Neither Albion nor Forest were at their best in the 90 minutes of goalless football.

Matz Sels made good saves from Pervis Estupinan and a shot from Carlos Baleba that went narrowly wide.

Forest’s Awoniyi saw a smart shot well deflected by Bart Verbruggen as the pendulum of possession switched between two cautious teams.

In the second half, the stalemate continued but with a twist – referee Bankes awarding a penalty to Forest for a trip by Mitoma on Elliot Anderson.

But after a lengthy VAR intervention, it was clear that Mitoma had touched only the ball and the referee announced his error via his headset and the decision was overturned.

Diego Gomez and Joao Pedro had chances to score for Albion as the tie entered extra time, with the latter forcing another great save from Sels.

It was Gomez and young Jack Hinshelwood who were the fall guys in the penalty shoot-out, Gomez blasting his effort straight at Sels.

At least Albion can now concentrate on a Champions League place, with their next Premier League fixture at the Amex on Wednesday (2 April) when they host Aston Villa.
