Games areas get facelifts

The MUGA at Moulsecoomb

Three games areas in Brighton and Hove are getting facelifts.

The multi-use games area (MUGA) at Withdean Sports Complex has been completely refurbished while Hangleton Park is getting the almost-new MUGA previously installed at Moulsecoomb hub.

Moulsecoomb will get a new 3G pitch as part of a major housing development now underway there.

Councillor Alan Robins, cabinet member for sport, explained: “Parks officers were aware that the popular multi-use court surface at Hangleton Park had been deteriorating for some time, and was reaching the end of its useful life.

“At the same time, the multi-use games area at Moulsecoomb was due to be removed to make way for a new housing and hub development, which will include a new 3G surface pitch.

“I’m delighted that our sports development and parks team spotted an opportunity to work together to recycle the good-as-new steel structure with a tarmac court and provide a perfect and sustainable solution for Hangleton.”

Of the Withdean MUGA, he said: “It’s fantastic to see the transformation of the multi-use games area at Withdean Sports Complex, which now offers a wider range of activities for residents, community groups and sports clubs.

“The refurbished facility will not only provide a new and improved playing surface, but also improved safety and accessibility for all.”

The Moulsecoomb recycled steel MUGA structure will be installed in Hangleton Park over about three weeks from Monday, with new tarmac also set to be laid and lines painted for football and basketball.

The cost to install and finish the recycled surface is around £58,000 – a fraction of the cost of a brand-new court and surfacing.

The new Withdean MUGA now supports a wide range of sports including tennis, netball, basketball and pickleball. Freedom Leisure, which runs Withdean Sports Complex on behalf of the council, is now taking bookings for the updated facility.
