Labour has chosen public relations director Nancy Platts to stand in Brighton Kemptown at the next general election.

She was chosen by party members at a meeting at Dorset Gardens Methodist Church in Dorset Gardens, Brighton, this afternoon (Saturday 15 June).

At the last general election in 2010 Ms Platts stood in Brighton Pavilion. She came second by 1,252 votes to Caroline Lucas, who became Britain’s first Green MP.

At the next election, which is expected in 2015, she will try to unseat the sitting Conservative MP Simon Kirby.

Last time Mr Kirby win the seat with a 1,228-vote majority over Labour candidate Simon Burgess.

Ms Platts was chosen from a women-only shortlist which included former BHASVIC student Katie Ghose, the chief executive of the Electoral Reform Society.
