Have you ever wondered what happens beyond that velvet curtain in front of you at Theatre Royal, Brighton? Well we need wonder no longer as ATG theatres have opened up the world behind the scenes of their venue to ages 8–14 and their accompanying adults. The summer holidays are coming to a close and the little, and not so little darlings, are getting bored so this is the ideal couple of hours to spend with those who are inquisitive and/or maybe would like to work backstage at some point.

Just stepping through the Stage Door in Brighton you immediately feel the history in the walls of this wonderful old theatre. Myself and my 7 year old granddaughter were the first to arrive and welcomed warmly by the lady on reception. Soon we were joined by three more families who were all excited as to what the afternoon workshop would bring. Before long, Jackie Alexander, our well informed guide for the session was telling us the history of the building and how it grew from the first owner’s house to become a theatre.

Leading us through to the stage she showed us the star dressing rooms, pointing out things of interest on the way. Back onstage we were introduced to the expert technical crew who were, after splitting us into groups, to take us into their domains. Our group was first taken, by Nathalie Psillou, to explore the realm of the follow spot operator. After explaining the job and showing us the large light we were invited to try it ourselves.

Next up was sound with Charlie Howsego who explained all the minutiae of the sound system, communication between the different roles during a show and the kids were allowed to have a go on the sound desk at the back of the auditorium.

Finally we were led up into the bowels of the theatre by Nick Goodwin and up to the very top of backstage to see the flying system – the operation of which had hardly changed for centuries. The history and its links with the maritime was fascinating and our offspring were offered the opportunity to pull on the ropes, with Nick bearing the weight, to see how scenery and backcloths were flown into position onto stage.

My granddaughter was delighted, as was I, with our afternoon discovering the secrets of how the magic of theatre comes to life.

An truly unforgettable experience which you should take advantage of next time it’s on offer to meet this tightly bonded team and discover the work that they do.
