18 months of roadworks set to begin on main seafront road

More main road disruption is set to hit Hove as work begins on installing a new cycle lane on the seafront in a project set to take 18 months.

Brighton and Hove City Council has not given a start date, but says work will begin “in the coming weeks”.

The national roadworks map says a storage compound for the works is scheduled to be set up on the A259 opposite Westbourne Villas from 28 September (Monday just gone) until 15 May.

The lane, alongside new pavements, bus stops, crossings, and loading and parking bays, will be installed on the stretch of the A259 between Fourth Avenue and the city’s western boundary.

The first section will be put in between Fourth Avenue and Hove Street.

Buses are currently being diverted because of the rebuilding of Western Road between Waitrose and Palmeira Square, which is set to be completed on 6 November.

It’s likely the A259 works will add more congestion to east to west journeys in southern Hove.

The council says access to homes and businesses will be maintained throughout and when work takes place immediately in front of properties, contractors will liaise with occupants and owners in advance.

Cabinet member for transport Trevor Muten said: “We carefully considered the space to develop a design that is accessible and keeps our city moving.

“The A259 Hove to Portslade Active Travel Scheme will provide safer routes for people walking, wheeling and cycling, improve accessibility and crossings and create a more attractive and welcoming space for residents, businesses and visitors alike.

“This is a significant investment in the city’s transport network and an important step towards making it easier for people to choose sustainable ways of getting around.

So this is happening at the same time that Western Road is also shut and there are one way blocked streets in operation for at least the next 6 weeks?

OMG. Just went for a 5 min walk along the fenced off Western Road while the new red route gets built. Not much space on the pavements. Almost got run down by ten cyclist cycling at speed on the narrow pavement despite lots of pedestrians including young children, elderly and disabled people crammed in. Cyclists don’t seem to care about safety of others? SO SO dangerous. Why no police ensuring public safety – stopping them and fining them?

I’ve got a good idea, fork it up the same time you’ve shut down Western Road @Brighton Council !

Is this the Transport Department trying to save the King Alfred by making sure no construction trucks can get anywhere near it, lol? Or will the builders all have to arrive by bicycle, double lol?
This council couldn’t organise a p – up in a Brewery and now seem to be piling up all their projects simultaneously for maximum city disruption and chaos. They are out of control and running on minimum brain cells.

Although they seem to have organised a hell of a lot of road repairs resurfacing and generally tidying up of the citys roads. So arguably they actually are doing the job they were voted in to do. Unlike the last council who forgot to spend the road maintenance budget…

Why not run for councillor at the next election if your soooo upset

There isn’t enough contempt in the world to bestow on this god forsaken evil sh*t house of a council. May every member who passed these plans be cursed forever more .

Well seems like a necessary evil having this work done – at some juncture you’ve got to bite the bullet and get something changed. Be a pain while they’re going through with it but the design makes sense in the long run.

Digging up Western Road to put in an unwanted Red Route – and now Kingsway at the same time!! Madness, sheer madness

This takes some serious planning, closing a couple of main roads at the same time both affecting major bus routes, this takes highly qualified people at least 5 years to put in place so as little disruption as possible occurs, it’s not too bad they only got one of the planning dates wrong by a few weeks, pretty good compared to what they could have mis-timed, in reality most of those clowns should have been smacked around the head with a large gols watch,,

I love the way they put a zebra crossing across a cycle lane, as if cyclists ever stop for pedestrians.
It looks as if pedestrians will never safely get to the south side of the road and to the seafront without taking their lives in their hands.
I’ve seen it at Old Steine – the zebra crossings ignored by cyclists, and still using the pavements rather than the route they’ve been given.
It’s beyond time that there was some enforcement

Trevor Mutun is just a zealot to two wheels or walking.
Does this mean no more two wheel pricks cycling on the prom now ?

A stunningly stupid plan with stunningly stupid timing considering the 6 months of a259 seafront disruption for the strengthening of the Arches and the 2 years a259 disruption for the construction of the new KALC sports hub. All at the same time. Plus the six weeks of Western Road closure. And considering most cyclists don’t want to cycle on the road anyway when they could cycle on the seafront. Either way, cyclists will carry on cycling wherever they like so there is no point wasting endless £millions on this bunch of fair weather hobbyists.
