BACA celebrates four years of improving GCSE results

The Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) said that GCSE results had improved for the fourth year running.

The proportion of pupils achieving five good GCSEs – graded A* to C including English and maths – rose to 48 per cent from 46 per cent last year.

Changes to the rules contributed to a dip in performance at a number of other schools but BACA students showed another improvement.

The gap between disadvantaged students – those eligible for free school meals – and the rest also closed further to 8 per cent compared with a national average of more than 27 per cent.

The school said: “Mathematics results are at an all-time high for a third year, and in line with national figures.

“The English department saw remarkable success with 82 per cent of students securing A*to C.

“The academy is expecting to maintain its high value-added score this year. In 2013 and 2014 BACA received the national SSAT award for student’s significant academic progress.

“In addition to the continual increase in the number of students achieving five-plus A*to C grades including English and maths (48 per cent), students were awarded a record number of A* and A grades (63 across the board) and 24 per cent of students achieved eight-plus GCSE grades C or higher.”

Among the students celebrating significant achievements are

  • Lubna Rahman who achieved ten grades at A*to C including four grades at A or A* and six grades at B or higher.
  • Rory Afrizal Hayes who secured nine grades at C or above including four grades at A or A* and three B or higher grades.
  • Marley Reynolds who secured eight grades at C or higher.
  • Dean Wakely who secured nine grades at C or higher including five grades at a B or higher.

Head teacher Dylan Davies said: “This is another great news story for BACA and we are very proud of the individual success stories of our students.

“The English and maths improvements and the progress shown by our students really tell a story of the committed and hard-working students, teachers and staff at our academy.

“We are keen to develop and further this success for all of the students coming through in the other year groups.

“This is a huge achievement and a significant stepping stone for the story of BACA’s success over the last four years.

“Well done everybody!”

The chairman of the governors Peter Kyle said: “Governors of BACA stand in awe of student achievement revealed by today’s results.

“With more than 100 per cent improvement in English and maths attainment since the academy opened and a stunning 10 per cent gain in English A*to C this year alone, the case is made for being one of the most exciting and ambitious places to study in our city.

“Our thanks go to the students, staff and the leadership team who work so hard to deliver such exciting results year after year.”
