The annual Chattri memorial service takes place on the South Downs in Brighton today (Sunday 8 June) to honour Indian heroes from the First World War.

The service is in remembrance of the sacrifice of Hindu and Sikh soldiers who were wounded, evacuated to Brighton for treatment but who died.

Temporary hospitals treated the injured at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton and at Brighton, Hove and Sussex VI Form College (BHASVIC) in Dyke Road, Hove.

The service is due to start at 2.30pm at the Chattri monument near Patcham.

After a welcome from Davinder Dhillon, the chairman of the Chattri Memorial Group, the Indian High Commissioner Shri Ranjan Mathai will lay a wreath.

After the service refreshments will be served in at Dorothy Stringer High School, in Loder Road, Brighton.

There will be a chance to see the Chattri exhibition based on the journey of soldiers from India to the Western Front and to Brighton.
