More solar panels being installed at Portslade end of Shoreham Harbour

Workers have started installing solar panels on the roof of another shed at the Portslade end of Shoreham Harbour.

Brighton Energy Co-op, the organisation behind the project, said: “This 200kWp system will cover an east-west roof on the south side of the port and generate more than 200,000kWh of electricity each year.”

The energy co-op array on the latest port building – Shed 3a – follows similar schemes involving Shed 10 and Hove Enterprise Centre at the port.

It also installed solar panels on the roof of nearby City Coast Church in North Street, Portslade.

Hove MP Mike Weatherley formally switched on the solar panels on the roof of Shed 10 earlier this year.

The Conservative MP was so impressed with the project that he invested £300 in the scheme, joining the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion Caroline Lucas as a member of the energy co-op.

Mr Weatherley said: “The Brighton Energy Co-operative is a brilliant initiative that has gone from strength to strength.

“I was delighted to learn that the next phase of work has begun and hope that more residents from the city will back this clean energy scheme.”

Over the next 18 months, the Brighton Energy Co-Operative hopes to double its current capacity.

Next Tuesday (1 July) Shoreham Port will hold its annual public and stakeholders’ meeting at the Barn Theatre in Southwick from 7pm to 9pm.

Well done BEC for quietly getting on and working to bring community owned renewable energy to the city and near neighbours.

@HJarrs – yes – well done BEC – a wonderful capitalist business leading to excellent return on investment for anyone who can’t have Solar PV systems installed on their own homes (where they could also reduce there own electricity bills with the free energy produced).

And best of all it has nothing to do with the green party (other than Mike wanting a good little earner like Caroline has already)!

And do you know who finances the payments for the electricity produced? The large energy companies such as EDF and eOn which the greens would nationalise if they got into power.

So thanks for the pro-capitalist anti-green propaganda!

I would have thought investing a co-operative would be a bit socialist for those at the more swivel-eyed end of the free-market-worshipping community, but hey, it’s great to have some converts on board!
